A funded scholarship for international students is the MEXT scholarship 2023–2024. This scholarship is offered for undergraduate, master’s, Ph.D., and training studies. The MEXT scholarship will pay for your tuition, accommodation, monthly living allowance, and round airfare travel expenses from your country to Japan.
Under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships Programme, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan provides scholarships to international students who want to pursue undergraduate or research (master / Ph.D.) at Japanese universities.
The MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship application cycle is typically issued in April. IELTS/TOEFL and Japanese language proficiency are not prerequisites for this fellowship.

MEXT Scholarship Coverage
A fully funded scholarship for international students to study in Japan is available through the MEXT Scholarship 2023. The following advantages will be given to the recipient of this scholarship:
- Allowances: Preparatory Allowance (2023 Rate), Monthly Stipend Allowance
- Education Fees: MEXT will pay the costs of the entrance exam and university tuition fees.
- Traveling Expenses: Travel to Japan: MEXT will pay for your round-trip Travel Expenses from your country to Japan. For the flight, the airline ticket will be an Economy-class ticket.
- Accommodations: Universities provide residence halls for international students.
Eligibility Criteria for MEXT Scholarship 2023
The applicant must satisfy each of the conditions listed below in order to be eligible for the MEXT Scholarship:
- Required Language: English
- Eligible Countries: All world countries
- Candidates must be citizens of countries with which Japan has diplomatic relations.
- A candidate who at the time of application was a citizen of Japan is ineligible.
- For Undergraduate Students: You must be at least 17 years old, under 25, and have finished 12 years of formal education or courses equivalent to a high school (including prospective graduates).
- For Masters / PhD Students: You must be under 35 and a college graduate, (including prospective graduates). Or you must have completed 16 years / 18 years of education.
- For Teacher training students: you must be under 35 years old and a graduate of a college or teacher preparation program. You must have at least five years of current teaching experience in your nation’s elementary, secondary, or teacher preparation institutions.
- For Japanese Study Students: You must be between the ages of 18 and 30. When applicants arrive in Japan, they must be enrolled as undergraduate students in faculties or schools that specialize in the Japanese language or culture at a university outside of Japan, and they must be enrolled in the home institution when they depart for their home countries.
How to Apply for MEXT Scholarship 2024?
To apply for a MEXT Scholarship, please follow the application steps below:
- From here, locate the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your Country.
- Visit the Japanese Embassy’s website in your Country. You may locate the MEXT scholarship under the Education / Scholarship tab.
- Download and complete the MEXT scholarship application form.
- Send the necessary paperwork to the Japanese embassy in your country (see list below).
- The Japanese Embassy will administer an examination in writing. See here for a sample written test with answers.
- The candidates will then be interviewed after that.
- Email or the embassy website will be used to notify the chosen candidates.

- The highest degree, confirmed by official stamps.

Note: A notarized copy of an English translation is necessary if the degree is not in English.
