National Science Scholarship Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be Singaporean: Non-Singaporeans are required to have obtained minimal Singapore Permanent Residence before the commencement of the studies.
- Have achieved excellent academic standing in the GCE ‘A’ Levels (preferably with 11 AUs), polytechnic diploma (preferably with Merit), or equivalent qualifications (e.g. International Baccalaureate or NUS High School diploma)
- Applicants who are in the last semester of their final year of studies are welcome to apply; however, successful candidates will only be awarded the scholarship if they obtain GCE “A” Level or equivalent results that meet A*STAR’s requirements
- Have applied or be applying for an undergraduate program at a top overseas university, to study in one of the areas listed under the “Research Areas” section.
Other requirements:
- Applicants should have a keen interest in Science and research. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and notable achievements in science- or math-related projects and activities
- Male scholars are required to serve in National Service before commencement of undergraduate studies
- Applicants are encouraged to sit for the SATs to broaden their choices of institutions for their undergraduate education. Although A*STAR does not mandate a minimum SAT score as a qualifying condition for the undergraduate scholarships awarded for studies, applicants are encouraged to submit their SAT scores, if available, to be included in the overall assessment of their applications
For Mid-Term NSS (BS-PhD) applicants:
- Be a Singaporean/ Singapore Permanent Resident who intends to take up Singapore citizenship
- Enrolled in a top overseas university and minimally complete at least 1 semester of graded results at the point of scholarship application
- On track to attain excellent academic standing for the current degree.
- Good research potential and/or achievements
- Tenured track or tenured academics/ Professors (or equivalent) to be at least 1 out of the 2 academic referees
Benefits of the National Science Scholarship
Support for undergraduate studies will be provided to successful students and will include*:
- Full cost of tuition fees
- Per monthly allowance
- Yearly travelling back and forth ticket
- Pre-study funding
- Fees for language programs (for students enrolled in universities in nations where English is not the official language)
A STAR Research Institutes: Research attachment opportunities, The same terms of assistance as full-term NSS (BS-PhD) winners will be available to mid-term awardees from the moment of the award, including upfront reimbursement of all tuition and/or mandatory fees beginning in Year 1 of study.
Application Procedure and How to Apply
- Application-1: The date for applications is December 1. Applications close on March 1st of the subsequent year. Click this link to apply for NSS (BS-PhD).
- Application-2: Mid-March through the middle of April. Candidates who get the shortlist must go through two interview sessions.
Details of the interview will only be communicated to those who have been shortlisted. - Application-3: starting around mid-May, Email notifications will be sent to the selected candidates.
- Application-4: While You’re Studying Scholars will take part in Vista, the distinctive developmental program series created especially for them by A STAR Graduate Academy.
At different academic and career events, the main areas of development for scholars are the focus of each Vista session.
The programs assist professional and academic progress, encourage networking with peers, and offer the opportunity to interact with A*STAR leadership and influential opinion leaders in the R&D ecosystem.
Past guests of honor included the CEO of the National Research Foundation, the Chairman of A*STAR’s Biomedical Advisory Council, and the Executive Director of A*STAR’s Science and Engineering Research Council.
