The Study in Canada Scholarships program offers short-term exchange opportunities for study or research at the college, undergraduate, and graduate levels in Canadian post-secondary institutions to students from post-secondary institutions located in the new eligible countries/territories.

About the Award: Collaborations between postsecondary institutions in Canada and those in the following eligible nations/territories—Algeria, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Taiwan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda—help to facilitate the Study in Canada Scholarships programme. These agreements are made between universities, colleges, and technical or vocational institutions. Candidates for study or research in Canada must be enrolled full-time in their home institution at the time of application and for the entirety of their stay in the country.

Eligibility: Candidates must be citizens of one of the eligible nations or territories listed below:
- Asia: Bangladesh, Nepal, Taiwan
- Europe: Turkey, Ukraine
- Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia
- Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda
Candidates:
- Must be enrolled full-time in post-secondary institutions in the countries or territories that qualify, and they must pay all tuition costs due to these institutions both at the time of application and throughout the exchange;
- who hold Canadian citizenship, or permanent residence, or who have a pending application for permanent residence in Canada are ineligible;
- are not eligible if they are already enrolled in an exchange scholarship program supported by the Government of Canada; and
- those who are already enrolled in a program at a post-secondary institution in Canada, are not eligible
Terms and conditions
The following terms and conditions must be met throughout the scholarship’s duration.
The post-secondary institution in Canada must:
- be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI);
- waive tuition and/or administrative fees for scholarship recipients as long as they are enrolled full-time and paying tuition to their home institution;
- notify the candidate and their home institution of any mandatory fees that, in exceptional cases, cannot be waived, before applying for a scholarship on the candidate’s behalf;
establish a contract with the beneficiary that states:
- The Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Development (DFATD) finances the scholarship;
- the beneficiary must submit records to the Canadian university detailing significant expenditures, such as travel and lodging; and
- The recipient acknowledges that DFATD may use their contact information for a variety of purposes, including inviting them to join the Government of Canada Scholars’ Alumni Association (GCSAA), inviting them to events hosted by the Canadian Embassy, High Commission, or Canadian Trade Office in their home country or territory and by DFATD in Canada, or for promotional and statistical purposes;
submit qualitative and quantitative reports during the scholarship period.
Scholarship recipients:
- must devote their full time to either studying or conducting research as specified by the Canadian university;
- must already be fluent in either English or French, the language of teaching at the Canadian institution, as the scholarship does not support language study. Each Canadian institution has its own set of language specifications;
- cannot hold another scholarship offered by the Canadian government;
- arriving in Canada to participate in a semester-based study exchange by September for the fall semester or by January for the winter semester;
- performing research must come in Canada by June 1, 2023, but no later than February 1, 2024, in order to accept their award. The scholarship could be revoked if you don’t show up by this time. The arrival deadline may be extended in extraordinary cases and with DFATD’s prior consent until March 1, 2024;
- are prohibited from participating in clinical training or clinically-oriented research involving direct patient care if they are students in pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, or other health areas;
- according to the Canadian institution’s policy, they must make sure they have suitable health insurance for the entirety of the scholarship;
- must devote the majority of their time in Canada to full-time studies or research;
- are anticipated to finish their studies at their home institutions once the scholarship period is ended.

Number of Awards: At least 50
Value of Award: DFATD will grant funding to the Canadian school in the form of a contribution agreement for each successful applicant. The Canadian institution will then be in charge of giving the money to scholarship beneficiaries.
The value of the scholarship varies according to the length of study:
- CAD 10,200 for college, undergraduate, or graduate students (Master’s and Ph.D.) for a minimum of four months or one academic term of study or research; or
- CAD 12,700 for graduate students (Master’s and Ph.D.) for a period of five to six months of study or research.
The Canadian host institution may also claim CAD 500 per scholarship recipient to help with administrative costs when the scholarship recipient arrives in Canada, in addition to the cash allotted to the recipients by DFATD.
Eligible expenses: The recipient of a scholarship from a Canadian institution will get funding to help with the following expenses:
- visa or study/work permit fees;
- airfare for the scholarship recipient alone to take the shortest and least expensive route to Canada, as well as return flight after the scholarship has been completed;
- health insurance;
- living expenses, such as accommodation, utilities and food;
- a public transit card, as well as ground transportation; and
- books and supplies required for the recipient’s study or research, excluding computers and other equipment.
How to Apply: On behalf of candidates, only Canadian institutions may submit applications. They could decide to set their own internal deadline for receiving the necessary documents.
